They didn't care that they'd seen in work in practice
thinking
[info]kazwell
Couple of cool quotes from a Clay Shirky talk on community & self-organization:

about Perl vs. C++: "they didn't care that they'd seen in work in practice, because they already knew it couldn't work in theory"

about software and services long-term success (6:25 mark): "You will make more accurate predictions about software and services if you ask yourself not "what's the business model", but rather "do the people who like it take care of each other"? That turns out to be the better predictor of longevity."

Interesting but not surprising
idea
[info]kazwell
Was reading some notes from Fred Wilson on posting frequency by platform (ie: does the microphone you use change how often you talk about yourself?). The interesting, but not surprising answer was "yes". In general (based on his personal content sharing habits):

with Blogs: 1-2 posts per day
with Tumblr: 4-5 posts per day
with Twitter: 6 posts per day

After seeing this, my next question was - which mic sounds best? (and what one inspires the best lyrics?)

Wilson mentions that his Tumblr is a bit like Del.icio.us, combined with better multimedia capabilities - but I wonder, in the long term - how much content will be available to reblog/remix if people create (ie: blog) less often?

Blogs, Tumblr, and Twitter are one thing (mostly text) - but what about the newest (although not new) amplifier on the block...

1,000,000 AGAINST THE NEW FACEBOOK LAYOUT! (with 2.7million members :)
Where do I protest this new iGoogle?
The next version of Windows Live has shipped

It's interesting to see that most of the comments could apply to almost any major redesign, ie:

  • To be really honest to you guys, i think this new thing is a total DOWN GRADE!! this was copied and paste from (insert popular site here), nothing original.
  • Ok, WTF. I go to (insert frequently visited page here) and suddenly everything has changed. I hate it, it literally hurts my eyes, I can't find anything. I am not kidding. How do I fix it or where can I protest?
  • (popular portal here), what were you thinking???? This new version is total garbage, totally confusing, and for a non programmer, the worse update to a progrma [sic] that worked.
What can be done to encourage more helpful user feedback?

New concerns about Obama
face
[info]kazwell
(My Friends) Have you heard the latest robo-calls on new concerns about Obama? In particular:

"Hello. I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama has not accepted Joe the Plumber's friend request on Facebook. We know he's logged on, because we saw he changed his status on Monday. On Tuesday, he joined the group Art Historians Are Saucy. But he still won't accept Joe the Plumber's friend request. He knows it's Joe. Joe uses the screen shot of the two of them together as his profile picture. That's not a uniter. That's the same old liberal-elite politics as usual."

Unbelievable and Unacceptable....John McCain - he'll be your (and Joe's) friend on Facebook and in life.

It's been a hard day's night...

Introducing Midori-san, the blogging houseplant
trampoline
[info]kazwell
Finally, an answer to the question of - "if houseplants could blog, what would they say"

"Midori-san started blogging about a week ago. So far, the plant’s highly structured posts summarize the day’s weather, temperature and lighting conditions, describe its overall physical condition, tell how much light it received via the user-activated lamp (see below), and explain how much fun the day was. Each post also includes a self-portrait photo and a plant-themed pun (in Japanese)"

How do people find out about our Election Community?

[info]kazwell
Hey guys,

Doing a quick test to see how people find out about our Election Community. Wondering what are the various ways to get there....of course there's LJ.com, but what other ways is the site being promoted? Do the site's partners have links to it? Any links for it on Digg, etc...?

More ads not sucking
face
[info]kazwell
I like the Smart Car and Windex ones:
http://www.advertnews.com/10-creative-advertising-ideas-from-students/

Also - the trend with these clever ads? They don't simply occupy the typical spaces (Smart Car), and if they do (Windex) they take advantage of the surrounding environment in a unique manner.

(still don't know how I feel about the possibility of ads invading every possible space....there has to be a line drawn somewhere, but it's tough to decide where it should be)

Just for fun

Great new app that's LJ compatible

I was extremely impressed while watching the demo for a new app called Bandcamp. The team's got a great history (creators of Oddpost, which went on to become Yahoo Mail), and their site's form/functionality is nearly flawless. If you're a musician you can't check it out soon enough.

Let's be Faux Friends?
life beta
[info]kazwell
Interesting post by Merlin Mann (who gives an LJ shoutout) about new "following" options appearing on other social sites - specifically a new feature on FriendFeed that allows users to “fake follow” people:

That means you can friend someone but you don’t see their updates. That way, it appears that you’re paying attention to them when you’re really not. Just like everyone does all the time in real life to maintain their sanity.

As duplicitous and sad as “fake following” sounds — and let’s be honest: the whole idea’s pathetic on a number of levels — for a certain kind of user, I can see why there’s a desire for this functionality.
